Fear plays some terrifying tricks on the mind. I have nightmares, kicking and thrashing at imagined enemies and sometimes falling out of bed. As a boy, when I walked home late at night I was so wary of strangers springing from hidden shadows that I would walk down the middle of the street so as not to be dragged down laneways on either side. Unreasonable? Yes, for a boy I suppose, but for women, not so unusual. I could sympathise with poor, plain Janet. I understood her fear.
